January 2007

The snow keeps coming, an inch here, an inch there, just enough to keep me off my scooter. It is maddening.

January, January, I am glad to see you on the way out; every day I put between myself and you brings me closer to the road again, to the sun.

It is 2007, and only once have I knowingly mistakenly put “2006″ on a dated document since New Year’s. I don’t much believe in NY Resolutions, but I have made it my mission to reprogram my brain to make me reflexively say “Hooray!” instead of “Bless you!” when someone sneezes. Hooray seems to be as good a resposne as any; in all cases, your body is at least trying to defend itself against a perceived threat to its well being. In 25-40% of the cases it will also be a celebration of having found a fellow sufferer of that dastardly photic sneezing reflex.

I admit that before today I hadn’t bothered to look up whether that (PSR) was a genetic trait or something everyone had. Whee!

In our office, people who share duties have different lunches so that someone is always available to field issues of a specific nature. This has the unfortunate side effect of creating a period of time 2 hours long in the middle of the day where collaboration is impossible.

So today, rather than updating the status of a specific project and deciding what to do next, I am sitting here, ranting to you.

So now Winter has finally decided to give us some snow, and the forecast looks bleak for my hopes of riding much for the next 10 days at least. I didn’t even ride to work this morning due to the slush and snow.

The upshot is that due to the miserable weather, I get to stay inside and play videogames. So there’s that particular silver lining.

Work is going along pretty smoothly, and today I got final confirmation for my work sending me to San Diego in March for the Lawson CUE event. Crazy.

I was going to rant a bit about invisible heat ray weapons as non-lethal weapons, but instead I will mention that today I had to try to convince someone NOT to pick Theresa as their confirmation saint. I hope I was successful.

The roads are clear and wet, and light snow is falling, but I rode this morning anyhow, because the weekend was utterly miserable in terms of weather.

So today I am hoping that when the weather service says that there is a 20% chance of precipitation, they really mean it.

Ride was cold but steady as ever, and so I won’t go on about it, and today is a pensive day anyhow. so there.

This morning it was 20° F out, and I rode anyhow.

I tried out my BREATHXCHANGE half-mask again this morning and my findings were consistent with my previous opinion: this product would be great for hiking and other such outdoor winter activities, but not so much for situations where air is blowign at your face in excess of 35 mph. The cold air blows right through the heat exchanger if you don’t keep breathing pressure on it.

So while it is “better than nothing” with regards to chin/neck/lips wind protection, it is not the solution I will be looking for.
