Welcome to Home Ownership!

Recently, we had some pipes leak in our upstairs bathroom. The pipes in the shower wall. The water dripping from these leaks landed in the ceiling of the living room, and eventually seeped through, causing significant damage to the ceiling. We had a plumber come out to replace the shower faucet (one of the leaks was in the faucet pipe itself) and in doing so, he discovered that the moisture had damaged the cementboard. He advised patching it and retiling/grouting/caulking around the new faucet + handles.

This is why we have been showering in the basement emergency shower for the last few weeks.

This thursday past, we had quite a thunder storm. Becca and I were downstairs playing soem Warcraft when we heard this strange noise. We were hearing the sump pump for the first time.

“Good!” I thought, “At least the sump pump is doing its job!”

The sump pump, unfortunately, is not connected to a particularly long chunk of pvc pipe. The water just goes right back down into the water table alongside the house.

Additionally, during this storm, the City of Akron unfortunately had some construction workers break a sewage drain near White Pond Drive. The result? 5 residential blocks full of houses whose basement drains have started spouting Category 3 water. Sewer runoff. Biohazard type goodness.

I was asleep at the time, but when I woke up Friday morning, ready to do my morning routine of Wii Fit and exerbiking, I noticed a faint buzzing. ABout halfway down the stairs I realized it was the sound of Becca’s uninterruptible power supply dying. The east end of the finished basement had standing water. The UPSes were fried. The carpet was soaked.

I immediately thought it was something wrong with the house, that this was rain water. So I sopped a bunch of it up and then went outside to unclog my gutters. It was only when my neighbor, Theresa, saw me on the roof and came over to tell us that everyone’s basement had flooded that we found out what had happened. We called the city and our insurance and got the ball rolling on getting Stanley Steemer over to take care of the situation. they eventually came over and removed our carpet, and a big chunk of the drywall, and sanitized the basement. It was crazy. The construction company will supposedly be reimbursing us for our deductible, and we’re insured for the rest. Now we’re just waiting on our adjustor and contractors.

Sigh.

So yesterday I placed the shower tiles and adhered them with mastic, and hopefully tomorrow or so I can get started on grouting/sealing them and gettign my shower back in working order. Whee!

Regarding the Eee PC:

On November 8, 2007, Fresno Unified School District, in Fresno, California announced a digital portfolio and laptop pilot program, in which 16 schools will use the mini-laptops in the classroom at a ratio of one laptop for every two students. Eventually the district expects that all 78,000 students will create and manage their own web-based portfolios from kindergarten through 12th grade.

I love this idea, but it is paramount that the profiles/blog be archived and retained for the entirety of their academic careers. When I was in my senior year of college, I found an old casette tape with my childhood antics on it. It was brilliant and wonderful. Imagine if all of that and my young works of art could’ve been preservedo nline for me to stumble upon years later? I love the idea, and I hope that in this digital age, thes students get to experience this joy.

Well, it’s too bad that Holland’s right full back didn’t remember the following rule regarding off-side position:

A player is not committing an offside offence if the player receives the ball directly from a throw-in, goal kick or corner kick.

That third goal from the throw-in really killed any last ditch efforts the Dutch were putting forth.

Ah well! It was good to see the Spanish beat italy, and now the question will be (I hope) German or Spain for the championship?

Whee!

Yesterday I stayed home and watched both the Sweden v Greece and Spain v Russia games. Villa (Spain) came away with the first hat-trick of the tourney, leading the Spaniards to a 4-1 victory in a terrific game. The Greece/Sweden game was much less inspiring. Greece are the championship defenders, and rely heavily on their extremely strong defensive line, hoping to hold the enemy at arm’s length until they make a mistake, at which time they cash in on it and then hold onto what lead they can manage. As such, this strategy creates two issues: The match is incredibly boring to watch when the Greek defense is holding the ball to weary the opposition, and they are at an incredible disadvantage when the opposition manages to put one in the back of the net. In the end, Sweden persevered and won 2:0.

Today, we have CZE:POR and SUI:TUR, and I am rooting for Portugal and Switzerland. I am indifferent to the Czech Republic, and Portugal plays with heart. As for the other game, I mean, c’mon. It’s SWITZERLAND. I think I’m obligated to cheer for them!
